Russell Simmons/ Green Latern Creates Obama Mixtape
MTV’s Mixtape Monday spoke to Uncle Russ and Green Lantern about their upcoming mixtape in support of Barack.
“I’m having a field day with these Obama speeches,” Green explained. “I actually got joints where I’ll make a beat, I’ll get somebody to sing a hook, and where there’s supposed to be verses, it’s just straight speeches. I played one for my mother, and she started crying. So it’s gonna be inspiring, but then on the street side, it’s just gonna be some descriptions of life on the street, but not any of the thuggery.”
Nelly Talks New Album
After four years of seemingly disappearing from music, minus a few guest appearances, Nelly is back in the studio and preparing to release his fifth album, Brass Knuckles.
With claims of album scheduling conflicts and other delays, the St. Lunatic is currently scheduled to release the upcoming effort on June 24th. According to Billboard, Nelly is still creating tracks for the album but is expected to collaborate from artists including Ciara, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Akon and LL Cool J.
In a previous interview with Rap-Up TV from last August, Nelly explained the significance of the album’s title.
“It was the best way I could explain how hard I was gonna hit you. It’s crazy,” Nelly said in the interview.
While not going in to full-detail at the time, Nelly confirmed producers Jermaine Dupri and Pharrell as key people working on tracks. He also said the album would feature a handful of new producers.
Brass Knuckles will be Nelly’s follow-up to his simultaneously released ’04 albums, Sweat and Suit, which combined for a total of 4.4 million sold copies in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

TIP Gets "Unusual" Guilty Plea Deal
Some legal experts are questioning why the federal government accepted a plea deal offered by lawyers representing an Atlanta hip hop artist who was facing federal gun charges.
Yesterday, T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, Jr., plead guilty to illegally buying machine guns. In exchange for his plea, T.I. must perform 1000 hours of community service by late March of next year.
The deal is unusual considering T.I. was a convicted felon prior to federal gun charges. Atlanta defense lawyer Page Pate says cases like T.I.'s usually leave defendants with at least a 5 year sentence.
There are a lot of people who are sitting serving time in federal prison right now who would love to talk to schools and churches and other community groups to serve some of their time, but they can't do that because they don't have his celebrity.
US Attorney David Nahmias yesterday defended the agreement saying T.I. has a greater chance of positively influencing at-risk youth than any government awareness campaign. T.I. could also face stiffer penalties if he breaks the plea deal.

Beanie Sigel Sent Back to Jail After Claiming He Is The King Of Philly
Beanie Sigel, who spent a year in jail for drug and weapons charges in 2004, was in federal court yesterday (March 28) for violating terms issued with his supervised release for a third time.
After submitting a false urine sample to probation officials on February 29th. As well as testing positive for controlled substances (including Xanax and Percocet) five times throughout the month; Sigel was sentenced to three months in prison with an additional year of supervised release.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Beanie Sigel (whose real name is Dwight Grant) was immediately taken into custody after being denied the opportunity to “self-surrender” when he got his personal affairs in order by U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick.
“I told you last time if you didn’t toe the line, jail was the only option,” Surrick said. “Mr. Grant is a big boy and he knows what the rules are. At some point, he has to grow up".
Sigel explained that he was an addict and “had a relapse” that had been triggered by financial pressure which stemmed from him not being able to travel to perform at big-venue concerts (his main source of income), a condition that was received as Sigel was placed in a halfway house for violating parole.
“I’m losing everything because of this situation,” Sigel said after admitting he had put himself there. Which garnished a response from Surrick: “I’ve heard your explanation, but that does not excuse your conduct".
Surrick then questioned Sigel about income that he receives from record sales. Sigel explained that he only “gets 14 cents on the dollar for every CD that is sold, and that is only after the record companies get their money off the top". Beanie Sigel released his fourth studio album, The Solution, in December.

Remy Ma To Appeal & Marry Papoose Behind Jail
Female rapper Remy Ma (real name Remy Smith) plans to appeal the court's guilty verdict given yesterday (March 27) in her trial for assault and weapons charges. As reported by HipHopSince1987 earlier [click to read], a jury convicted Remy on two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion and criminal possession of a weapon.
Remy's attorney Ivan Fischer still remains adamant that she accidentally shot Makeda Barnes-Joseph in her car, after a scuffle over $3,000 cash allegedly stolen from Remy's purse in July of 2007.
During his closing statements, Fischer claimed the accidental shooting theory was a fact that was supported by Barnes-Joseph's own testimony. However, prosecutors say that Remy Ma's shooting was the result of the rapper's decision to take "an illegal .45-caliber automatic and [load] it with hollow-point bullets and go into Ms. Joseph's car."
Remy Ma faces 25 years in prison. She will be held in prison until her sentencing day next month.
In an e-mail he wrote to MTV, Papoose said that he and Remy had plans to marry next month—and that those plans will continue, despite her facing up to 25 years in prison. This builds upon what's been previously reported by DX [click here to read...]
"We always wanted to keep our personal lives personal, so that's why we never went public with our relationship," he said. "Right now, I just feel like she gotta live through me. Yes, we were scheduled to be married on a yacht April 27th. But due to circumstances beyond our control, we are now making arrangements to be married in prison."
Papoose has previously shown affection toward Remy in his lyrics (“Remy look good in person, just like she do in the magazine/so I’ma stay close to Ms. Martin, like Dr. King”), but the two had flatly denied being involved up until this point.
Freck Billionaire Arrested For Selling Crack
One-time HipHopSince1987 featured artist Freck Billionaire [click here to read feature...] was arrested earlier this week in northern New Jersey for reportedly selling crack cocaine to an undercover police officer.
Based out of West Philadelphia (where Freck had existing warrants), the rapper had garnered attention being under the tutelage of Just Blaze. Through Desert Storm Entertainment, Freck had collaborated with the likes of DJ Clue and Fabolous, with whom Freck appeared on the bonus song to From Nothin' to Somethin' "This Is Family" alongside various Street Fam members.
Previously, Freck mentioned that he had been arrested 19 times in less than four years. With a bail set at $150,000, if found guilty, the rapper faces felony time in prison. Publicists have yet to release a statement on the incident.

Remy Ma Found Guilty
It seems as if T.I. won't be the only rapper facing jail time in the near future. Today (March 27) 26-year-old Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma (real name Remy Smith) has been convicted on four major charges of the nine she was charged with -- two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon --after a 2007 incident in which she shot a friend of hers in the stomach (non-fatally) after a fight over $3,000 in cash stolen from Remy's purse. Remy's failed defense was that the shooting was an accident.
Assistant District Attorney Michael McIntosh said Remy "took an illegal .45-caliber automatic and loaded it with hollow-point bullets," then used both hands to cock the weapon as she got into the car. "She took every step you had to take to shoot somebody," said the prosecutor.
Defense lawyer Ivan Fisher said the gun went off accidentally as the women struggled over the bag.
The victim, former friend Makeda Barnes Joseph, who was shot in the abdomen, testified that she underwent three surgeries during a three-week hospital stay.
Remy was not found guilty of gang assault and witness tampering, among the nine total charges she faced. Reports are surfacing that as the verdicts were read, the courtroom broke out into madness with the victim's friends and family taunting Remy and making lewd remarks.
Remy could face up from five to 25 years in prison at sentencing. She was led out of a Manhattan courtroom Thursday, weeping and in handcuffs.
Justice Rena Uviller ordered her jailed without bail while awaiting her April 23 sentencing.

T.I. Expected To Plead Guilty
Just days after addressing a congregation for an Easter church service, T.I. is expected to plead guilty to weapons charges according to various sources.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that T.I., real name Clifford Harris , will enter his plea around 1:30 pm. at an Atlanta courthouse. Tip ’s sentencing will come at a later date, and will likely face prison time.
Prior to his Easter address, T.I. had been confined to house arrest after posting $3 million bond.
The trouble began last October when T.I. was arrested in Atlanta in a parking lot near a Walgreens store for allegedly trying to buy weapons, just hours before he was to perform at the BET Hip Hop Awards .

How Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are related to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
The New England Historic Genealogical Society reported that Mr Obama is a distant cousin of actor Brad Pitt, while Mrs Clinton is related to Pitt's girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.
Releasing the findings of a three-year-long study, the society issued a bizarre - if intriguing - array of blood ties between the presidential candidates and the great and the good on both sides of the Atlantic.
Among them, Mr Obama is said to be distantly related to Sir Winston Churchill, while his rival Mrs Clinton is reportedly a cousin, far removed, of the Duchess of Cornwall.
Researchers at America's oldest genealogical groups also said that Mrs Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother's side, has familial ties to the singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette, as well as the author Jack Kerouac.
They claimed that Mr Obama, whose white mother was from Kansas and black father from Kenya, is linked to six US presidents - both Democratic and Republican - including George W Bush, who is said to be a 10th cousin.
"His kinships are across the political spectrum," said Christopher Child, a genealogist who traced the family histories of US politicians for the project.
He said that while the candidates often focus on pointing out their differences, their ancestry shows they are more alike than they think.
"It shows that lots of different people can be related, people you wouldn't necessarily expect," he said.
Mr Child said that the ancestry of John McCain - said in separate research to be "related" to Robert the Bruce - was more difficult to trace because records on his relatives were not as complete as those for the Obama and Clinton families.

Album Sales: Week Ending 3/23/08
Despite lots of shuffling around this week, Hip Hop and R&B still holds its own on the charts with Bad Boy's Danity Kane claiming the top spot. The ladies' sophomore album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, sold 236k in its debut. Hit music compilation Now That's What I Call Music Vol 27 holds the #2 spot for the second week in a row while Rick Ross' Trilla is bumped down to #3 with just over 90k sold this week, bringing him to 290k total. Flo Rida's highly anticipated album Mail on Sunday, driven by his smash hit "Low" debuted this week at #4 with just under 86k sold, while Snoop Dogg's Ego Trippin slips down from #3 to #7 with 86k units, bringing him to 194k total.
Unable to make her way back onto the top 10, Alicia Keys' As I Am holds the #13 spot with a still respectable 40k in her 19th week on the charts which brings her to 3.3 million sold, as Janet Jackson's Discipline continues its decline at #17 in its 4th week (33.5k sold). Gnarls Barkley rush-released their sophomore effort The Odd Couple three weeks early after the album prematurely leaked. Though many projected high sales due to their popularity on the iTunes album charts, The Odd Couple only achieved the #18 spot selling just over 31k copies. Def Jam's Rocko follows close on Barkley's heels with Self Made selling almost 28k this week and landing him at the #21 spot. Sheek Louch also debuted a new album this week to a mild response. Silverback Gorilla came in at #41 with just under 17.5k sold, while Fat Joe's Elephant in the Room failed to keep its buzz afloat and nose-dived from #6 last week to #56 this week with an even 15k sold, 61k total. Webbie holds down the #64 spot with 14k sold and 134k total.
50 Cent's New Video Game
With the video game industry creating an enormous buzz with the release of Grand Theft Auto 4 this May, 50 Cent is looking to capitalize with his second video game, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand.
The game will be a follow-up to his 2005 multi-million selling release, Bulletproof, yet the game’s producer claims it will not only be better than the previous offering but that the upcoming game will cover new concepts and storylines.
“Blood on the Sand is something more exotic, more Hollywood blockbuster. This game set’s 50’s character against a cabal of international gangsters on a far-flung, bullet-riddled adventure,” Vivendi Games producer Aaron Blean told MTV News.
Although Blean will play a major role in the game’s development, he credited 50 Cent’s influence and suggestions to make the release novel in its locations and mysterious storyline.
“I would say it’s inspired by ‘Three Kings’ meets ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It’s definitely a crime story,” Blean said.
The producer also hinted at some improved game play features suggested by the G-Unit camp that should help the game to compete against the relatively challenging video game market.
“When 50 was on site at Vivendi with Tony Yayo, one of the things they challenged us to do was introduce new elements of game play in the game. Blood on the Sand will include vehicle missions such as a driver-and-turret-gunner Humvee road chase and a helicopter-borne shootout, in which 50 and his ally ‘rain death from above’ onto enemies,” Blean admitted.
Although the game will look to break video game records and increase the G-Unit fan base, one key feature is lacking with the game’s option to play as Young Buck.
“[T]he second player’s character can be, at last count, one of three members of the G-Unit: Tony Yayo, Whoo Kid or Lloyd Banks, each specializing in different combat techniques,” Blean said in referring to Blood on the Sand’s additional character capabilities.
While details are still emerging, the producer has confirmed that 50 Cent will be making exclusive tracks for the game and that fans should expect to see various 50 brand integration in the game. As of now, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is scheduled to drop for the Xbox 360 and PS3 this fall.

MySpace’s plan to launch a digital-music joint venture with the major record companies is picking up steam, as the social networking giant nears deals with Sony BMG and Warner Music Group, multiple sources familiar with the situation told The Post.
The agreements could be signed as soon as this week. The service is expected to launch later this year.
The new Myspace Music site will turn to a pay-per-download basis, focusing on the digital sales of music in MP3, ringtone, and video forms. N.E.R.D. Discusses New Album
Pharrell Williams and the N.E.R.D. crew are prepping the release of their next LP. As they explained it, much of the album is going to take fans on a trip through various genres and feelings.
"We didn't care about genres; we're not doing this for the money. We're doing this for people who pledge allegiance to our movement," P told MTV.
"It's a mixture of senses that may cause a person to experience colorful hearing, auditory smell," group member Shay added. "For example, you might see something, and it might trigger a song. You might hear something, and it might trigger a taste in your mouth. When we created this album, it was the music we envisioned while creating it. We decided it would be the appropriate title for the album."
"If you really analyze that, the most inspiration is probably deep inside a synesthesiac. So for us, 'seeing sounds' is what we relate to the most. We figured we'd make an album out of it," Pharrell noted.
"Energy and emotion was the criteria [while recording], but we made the music anticipating the [live] show. That was the most important thing. ... [The song] 'Spazz' is [a] nostalgic, hip-hop feeling with some drum and bass. It becomes a big, tall monster. It's almost like this big gorilla looking down at you. If he smacks you, he kills you. His fingers are the size of your body. That's kinda what we're doing in N.E.R.D. We're facing this big monster of, of what we know is out there, of what we see, that big monster of energy."
Starting in mid-April, the N.E.R.D. crew will join Kanye West on the Glow in the Dark Tour. While their single, "Everyone Nose" (a song about cocaine), will be released soon, their album, Seeing Sounds, will be released in June.

Nate Dogg Pleads Guilty
Former Death Row recording artist Nate Dogg won't be packing heat for the next ten years!
TMZ has learned Nate, who is Snoop Dogg's cousin, pleaded guilty in Orange County, Calif. court on March 20 to aggravated trespassing and battery stemming from a domestic violence complaint back in 2006. Dogg was sentenced to three years informal probation, must complete a domestic violence/batterers treatment program and can not own a weapon for 10 years. What's a guy to do without his piece?!
In 2006, Nate was charged with five misdemeanors -- aggravated trespass of a dwelling, battery, annoying telephone calls, dissuading a witness from reporting a crime and violating a protective order from a previous domestic violence incident -- after breaking into a Huntington Beach home where his ex-girlfriend, Jane Doe, her new boyfriend and her mother resided. Nate then punched the boyfriend in the face and left.
While three of the five charges were dropped, Nate's ex and her bf both filed restraining orders against the hip hop artist.
It hasn't been an easy couple of years for the 38-year-old: In December 2007, he suffered a stroke and spent time recovering in a medical rehabilitation facility.

Yo! MTV Raps Makes Temporary Return
According to an entry on MTV’s Sucker Free Blog, the station is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its historical show Yo! MTV Raps by bringing it back for the month of April.
Airing both on the TV station and online, the show will offer rare photos of artists, playlists of old school videos, interviews with hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Doctor Dre, and other classic clips.
When it first aired in 1988, Yo! MTV Raps was the station’s first Hip-Hop music show. Though its season finale was on Aug. 17, 1995, the show is historically acclaimed for its effect on hip-hop and pop culture, and has lived on via T-shirts, a Puma sneaker series, in-song references by artists such as Ice Cube and Juelz Santana, and other avenues.

Fabolous Next Release Will Be A Concept Album
“What Jay-Z did [with ‘American Gangster’] … he took that Frank Lucas character and put it in the frame of his Jay character,” Fab opined. “That’s what I wanna do. I don’t wanna say I that I’m actually the character, but take some of his scenarios or some things I went through and tell it in my tone.”
Fab refused to disclose the movie he was patterning his album after, but he said it isn’t too old, though it is classic. He doesn’t anticipate too many cameos, and producers on Loso’s radar include DJ Toomp, Kanye West, Just Blaze and Polow Da Don. With a structure in place, he feels he can complete his opus at a more expedient rate than usual.

According to Atlanta news, , during the service, T.I. addressed the congregation himself….

Doomsday Movie Review
I went to go see this movie last night and it was great. I never been so into a movie before a day in my life (well maybe a few times). I seriously could of sat in my seat for another hour or so had the movie been any longer.
For me the movie was great but when they started to drive the Bentley I was finished. I never wanted one of those so bad. I checked BentleyMotors.com and for a used Bentley Continental GT 2007 like the one shown in the movie with about less then 4,000 miles will run you about $170,000. So don't get like me and get your feelings hurt when you see the movie and decided that a Bentley coupe is the car for you because that price is a fucking 15 year mortgage for most Americans.
This is movie is Resident Evil meets The Warriors meet Lord Of The Rings meet 28 Days Later 300. This movie only had two play times up at King Of Prussia, Pa so that means its on its way out of the movie theater, "So Hurry Up And Buy!"

Oakland, California's Aflexo Wheels is launching a new design, the "All-Star Rim." The song is titled "Stars."

12 Year-Old Tries to Kill Soulja Boy
There was one arrest at the latest Soulja Boy concert at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. A 12 year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday night for throwing a rock through the windshield of Soulja Boy's bus.
Why? The kid told arresting officers, "I hate Soulja Boy".
Bloomington police used a supervisor and five officers on overtime to provide security for the hip hop concert.

Plies Talks New Female Clothing Line, Upcoming Dating Show
It's been less than a year since his debut album dropped but Plies is already planning to release his sophomore album this June. In this SOHH exclusive, the Florida born rapper talks about his new album, Definition of Real, his upcoming reality show and his new clothing line.
As SOHH previously reported, Plies is preparing to release his sophomore album, on June 10th, just ten months after dropping his debut.
"To be able to turn around two albums in a ten month frame, first and foremost I do understand how much of a blessing it is to have such success on The Real Testament," he says. "To have a certified gold album in this climate definitely speaks volumes."
Plies is planning to repeat the success of his first album by following the same format of keeping costs down.
"I always like to keep my overhead low," he says "I don't want to be in a situation where I'm spending $2 million on a project". Instead of paying high prices for beats from big name producers, Plies prefers to rely on production from his brother's company, The World Music Group.
"We got a lot of good producers under our umbrella," he says. "At the end of the day if you're not careful you can go through this business coming out with great records, great albums and walk away with nothing to show. So, I'm just trying to tighten up my business side of it."
Plies also decided to go easy on the guest appearances. He didn't have any other rappers on his first album and he won't have any on this one. "I kept it simple," he says. "It's all me on this album but I was able to work with a Ne-Yo who gave me that good radio side, that radio look".
The Florida rapper understands the importance of a strong, radio friendly first single. On his first album, he found success with the T-Pain laced, "Shawty," which topped the US hip-hop charts and sold over one million ringtones.
In addition to his sophomore album, Plies has a female clothing line and a reality dating show in the works based on his two-part single, entitled "Bust It Baby". "The definition of a 'Bust It Baby' for me is the best female sexual experience," he explains
The footage of his "Bust It Baby" casting call racked up over 200,000 plays on YouTube and has sparked a bidding war between three major television networks. His "Bust It Baby" clothing line is 95% done and is comprised of "sexy" items like short shorts and spandex.
On a side note Plies had the typical or shall I say ideal start of a career. He had the T-Pain radio single, then the Akon radio single, both which were radio smashes because they catered to the females and the airwaves yet he the hoodiest of hood. And he got like 4 or 5 videos out. I mean if I was a rapper my first two singles would have T-Pain and Akon on them so that I could sell and make a name for myself. Then everything after that people will listen to me just because. Shit his first single has Ne-Yo, which is also a 2 part song and has its own clothing line and tv show coming out. The bull Plies is definitely on his grind.

Lloyd recently revealed that he and New Orleans native Lil' Wayne are considering recording an album together.
The two previously joined forces on Lloyd's hit song "You," which helped propel his 2007 album Street Love to certified gold status.
In a recent interview with Rhapsody Lloyd shared news that the two will be joining forces again on his upcoming album, and while they were recording the new song he says the two talked of a possible joint album.
"So I come out the booth," Lloyd told Rhapsody of the studio experience. "Weezy go in and do about 38 bars. The beat cuts off and he's still rapping. He's just killing it and I'm saying to myself, 'Oh this dude is incredible. I gotta work with this dude for real.' And from there, we started our relationship. We've even talked about doing an album together and calling it Best of Young Worlds."
When reminded that Omarion and Bow Wow recently teamed on a similar concept, Lloyd was careful to distinguish a difference between Face Off and the potential Best of Young Worlds project.
"Lloyd and Lil' Wayne is a different kind of intensity from Bow Wow and Omarion," Lloyd said. "We appeal to a much older crowd, and we a little bit more hardcore with our style. But yeah, we definitely thinking about it."
