The Evil Genius Invades Liberty City

After “hosting” the radio show The Beat 102.7 on Grand Theft Auto IV, DJ Green Lantern has been assigned the task of creating the games first Hip Hop focused album.

“The Grand Theft Auto games have always featured stunning soundtracks and the amount of eclectic music in Grand Theft Auto IV goes above and beyond anything we have been able to do before," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. He went on to say, "DJ Green Lantern's contributions give the soundtrack a true New York flavor and we're excited to be releasing his full album to
fans.”

The “true New York flavor” DJ Green Lantern has brought in the past is no understatement. His collaborations over the years include D-Block, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, and Busta Rhymes, to name a few.

Being a household deejay name in Hip Hop, Green Lantern feels this is a great opportunity for him to “graduate” to the next level. “From making mixtapes, to being on the radio, to touring with the biggest artists on the planet, and then for the biggest video game title to solicit me to create exclusive music is something most people could only dream about, it's like a graduation," said DJ Green Lantern. "Rockstar Games understood what I bring to the table as far as not just presenting music, but creating music.”

The 16-track album will include eight songs from The Beat 102.7 (which are all previously unreleased), and eight newly minted songs crafted in the same vein as his radio show on Grand Theft Auto IV.

Liberty City Invasion: Music from and Inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV will hit online digital retailers May 20th, with a physical CD date coming soon.

Grand Theft Auto IV Shatters Sales Records

When Grand Theft Auto IV was originally announced, it was an easy assumption that it would become one of the biggest video game releases ever. As of Tuesday, May 7th 2008, it is not one of the biggest – it is the biggest video game release of all time.

The Rockstar Games parent stated today that they have sold six million copies of its fourth installment of the much ballyhooed GTA franchise. First day sales were a staggering $310 million (3.6 million copies sold) and nearly doubled Halo 3’s previous best $170 million first day outing. Not to mention that GTA4’s first day sales were $10 million more than Halo 3’s entire debut week of sales.

"Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two, in a statement.

The game has received high accolades from numerous gaming outlets. Most have given the game a perfect rating and have claimed it to be one of the most innovative gaming experiences ever.

Green Lantern to Have Own Show on Grand Theft Auto IV

Add this to the list of things GTAIV's doing that its predecessors didn't: at least one of the new title's radio stations will feature only one artist, who'll be providing an all-new set of tracks for the game. Hip-hop DJ Green Lantern has told King magazine:

Somebody within my camp said that they were interested in doing some stuff. We sat down and it ended up like a whole radio show. This particular show, there's a little bit of budget involved. It's not the normal licensed-out music. When you jump in the car, you're going to be able to hear a whole Green Lantern radio show filled with nothing but exclusive music I produced for the game. I think it's the first time that's ever been done.
